Skill Building/ Preparation
Do anger or anxiety get so big so fast that you feel like you’re going crazy or spiraling out of control? Have you wondered if there might be new coping skills you could learn to help you feel better faster? For clients experiencing frequent intense emotions, PTSD treatments like EMDR Therapy and ITCT (both described below) frequently include an initial preparation stage to build new coping skills and increase positive emotional experiences prior to beginning to process past trauma. In my practice, I often incorporate elements of treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS) when appropriate to help clients gain both the coping skills and the increased awareness of their inner landscape that they need to better manage intense emotional responses.
EMDR
Do you feel trapped by your past, overwhelmed by memories, nightmares, or negative self-beliefs and emotions? Perhaps you have struggled with anxiety since an especially stressful life event or have found yourself paralyzed and numb, unable to bring yourself to make the steps you want to make towards future goals. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a powerful evidence-based treatment for PTSD and other trauma and stressor related disorders. EMDR Therapy can also be used to effectively treat anxiety that links back to upsetting past events. With its capacity to unlock memories that have gotten stuck, EMDR Therapy allows you to heal from the symptoms of PTSD by stimulating your brain’s natural capacity for healing. After reprocessing is complete, many find that the way they feel and think about the past is transformed, empowering them to move forward into their future with new freedom.
ITCT-A
Feeling as though you don’t know where to turn and hope is out of reach? With its focus on building a trusting, safe relationship with your clinician, Integrative Treatment for Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A) is a client-centered trauma treatment that will allow you freedom to set a pace that is right for you. As an evidence based approach, ITCT-A is used to treat symptoms of PTSD as well as other trauma and attachment related symptoms in adolescents and young adults who have been traumatized more than once. This approach to the treatment of complex trauma allows for maximum flexibility in treating the trauma symptoms that are most impacting you at a pace that is right for you. Through regular conversation with your therapist, treatment priorities are re-evaluated and updated based on your current needs so that your treatment can continue to progress and move you towards the goals that matter most to you.
Sandtray Play Therapy
Have you ever been overwhelmed by emotions that you are unable to name? Or found yourself caught in a memory but unable to explain to others what is happening? Trauma affects the regions of the brain that are responsible for concentration, focus, and speech, making it difficult to process traumatic events verbally or cognitively. Sandtray Play Therapy offers an alternative to words that allows your hands and unconscious mind to explore and process trauma through symbols, miniatures, and play in the sand. While it can be used as a stand-alone approach, Sandtray Play Therapy is also frequently used as an adjunct approach in trauma treatments like EMDR and ITCT. It is a form of play therapy that can be used with children, adolescents, and adults alike.
